COMMANDOpera has been utilising the social media twitter since December 7th of last year. The by product of being unable to ‘live blog’ a performance for readers as the WiFi signal was seriously compromised. Here is the link: http://twitter.com/commandopera for those who would like to know immediately the headline of all articles as they go live. Since that time COMMANDOpera has paid a great deal of attention to watching the tweets of other related Opera art form venues, and it really can become addictive. Indeed there are tweeters who really can come up with the most mindless and insipid thought imaginable, but they generally reside in L.A. and are not related to Opera. Nevertheless, the amount of critical information on Opera one derives from twitter is seriously impressive. Interestingly, opera houses globally are utilising the resource more and more frequently to get their message out to the public at large. COMMANDOpera advises ALL readers to get yourself an account and hook yourself up everywhere so that you may have the important and relevant information you want delivered directly to your computer. Start with COMMANDOpera and take a look at who I am following as a place to begin (your welcome…..).

Well research does take COMMANDOpera to some rather unusual places. A few weeks back COMMANDOpera profiled the acclaimed Soprano Miss Arianna Zukerman, and while doing so, stumbled across a business venture Miss Zukerman was involved with. An iPhone application. One has to admit that after meeting with Miss Zukerman, nothing which had to do with promoting music was off the table where this artist is concerned. While we did not speak on it at the time, one has finally heard from Miss Zukerman about ‘My Diva Roars’ . Aaah this is a site you have to look into for the sheer humor value that is unique to say the least. Miss Zukerman who is in California doing her first Rossini Stabat Mater, indicated that she and her husband and a few friends came up with the novelty which is intended as a tongue in cheek introduction to Opera. COMMANDOpera will not give more than that away, other than to tell you its now available at the iTunes app store!

On so many levels COMMANDOpera smiles broadly at this story. Perhaps the most fun is that the Lyric Opera of Chicago is going to New York to poach some Eastern Seaboard vocal talent.
THIS is what COMMANDOpera likes to hear from houses when it comes to fundraising!

BRAVO!

Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Fantasy of the Opera Gala

$ 504,000 net raised!

Guild Board of Directors’ 26th annual Fantasy fundraiser, “Hearts Afire,” sizzled in the Civic Opera House on Sat., Feb. 6, 2010

A thousand ruby and magenta roses, fiery red table linens and curtains, plus cut crystal centerpieces, elaborate rose-colored lighting, and ornately painted signage all set the scene for “Hearts Afire,” the 26th annual Fantasy of the Opera Gala benefit hosted by Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Guild Board of Directors at the Civic Opera House on Saturday, February 6.

Early in the evening, an array of elegant tastings prepared by some of Chicago’s top chefs enticed the crowd of 560 ticket-holders for the festive fundraiser. Restaurant stations could be found throughout the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Grand Foyer and American Airlines Mezzanine. Many enjoyed an “Elixir of Love” cocktail (rum punch served in bright red glasses on lit neon trays) and other refreshments while they placed silent-auction bids beneath red silk canopies in the Nancy W. Knowles Lobby, or purchased raffle tickets.

The Fantasy Cabaret showcased the diverse musical talents of current Lyric artists Nicole Cabell (The Elixir of Love), Danielle de Niese (The Marriage of Figaro), Susan Graham (The Damnation of Faust), Joyce DiDonato (Figaro), David Cangelosi (Tosca), and Philip Kraus (Figaro); as well as Ryan Opera Center members Angela Mannino, Amber Wagner, Kathryn Leemhuis, and David Portillo. Selections by William Bolcom, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Kurt Weill, Rogers & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and others were performed. Lyric’s music director Sir Andrew Davis was master of ceremonies, and pianist Craig Terry accompanied the singers.

Baritone Mark Delavan, who starred in last season’s “Cav/Pag” and returns next season for A Masked Ball, brought down the house with his soulful renditions of Elvis Presley’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” and Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” which had Fantasy guests clapping along. In a Fantasy Cabaret first, Delavan sang an encore – “Ring of Fire,” also by Johnny Cash. Delavan accompanied himself on guitar, and was joined by pianist Craig Terry and double-bass player Jonathan Gilley.

Following a seated dinner prepared by Calihan Catering, many guests danced to the Ken Arlen’s Indigo in the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Grand Foyer until midnight. Others enjoyed elegant chocolates by Godiva in the Opera Club, which was dubbed the GoDiva Lounge for the evening.

Sometime after 11 p.m. mezzo-soprano Susan Graham joined Ken Arlen’s Indigo onstage for an impromptu rendition of George Gershwin’s “Summertime.” Guests on the main floor stopped dancing to listen, while those on the mezzanine level (including Lyric general director William Mason and his wife Diana Davis), crowded the rail to watch. Mezzo soprano Joyce DiDonato, who earlier in the evening had crooned “My Funny Valentine” during the cabaret, encouraged her fellow mezzo to go for the high C.

This is an advertisement for the Lyric Opera, similar to the fundraiser in San Francisco. Although COMMANDOpera could have a great deal of fun with anything based around St. Valentines Day in Chicago, I am certain this will not be a massacre of anything other then your checkbook. But at least the rewards are worthwhile on this date with history.

Alright. I determined to make this a different kind of blog. Most important is to make all surfers welcome regardless of their intellectual background regarding opera. Without question there are many up and coming young operaphiles who have not yet found all they need to know about this art form. COMMANDOpera will continually work be the go to place for this group as they represent the future. As for the hardcore, you will find suitable and relentless titillation at COMMANDOpera.

IN THE HOUSES is where you go when you want to find out who is doing what in which house down the road. But perhaps more importantly, what happened the night before! Posts that are not informational are filed here.

I need not explain what BREAKING NEWS is all about to any readers. If there is an announcement or developing story of CRITICAL importance it will be placed here. Anyone connected professionally within the industry who wishes to immediately release newsworthy items may submit them to directly and confidentially to myself at crewmantle@commandopera.com in the Contact area.

A section that will be most useful is THE COMMAND CENTER. Any… ANY questions you may require an answer to can be submitted here, and if I can’t find the answer through my extensive network, an educated reply will at the very least be given. Bear in mind COMMANDOpera is NOT a news desk and does not have access to the resources of the mainstream media. Queries of this nature can be directed to commandcenter@commandopera.com in the Contact area. This is where all informational posts will be archived.

This department is where posts which are educational in context will reside. For those who are directly involved with opera in all its facets there will be THE MASTER CLASS. While many artists have their own blogs, I would invite them to post here on relevant topics. For instance, say a tenor is perfoming Alfredo in La Traviata and wants to announce something special he intends to do during a particular broadcast, he could announce it to the global audience here. Or for that matter, if a senior artist wishes to give back to students a useful technique or approach regarding a section of a work, this would be the place. These posts will not be edited in any manner (other than perhaps the odd translation error), as they are the direct words from these esteemed artists. I invite artists to submit directly to masterclass@commandopera.com in the Contact area.

Naturally COMMANDOpera will avail any artist or house the global reach of the INTERMISSION section. Discrete rate enquiries can be made to advertise@commandopera.com in the Contact area.
