L’Elisir Opens the Metropolitan

L’Elisir d’Amore
will prima on the evening of the September 25th at the Metropolitan Opera. Last seasons opening featured a new production of a Donizetti work with the same soprano, which makes COMMANDOpera wonder when something has become a bit too much of a good thing. Although not even close to the buzz of Anna Bolena, L’Elisir is in fact a great deal of fun and opens the 2012-2013 on a forward note for the theatre. Miss Netrebko who essays the role of Adina must be pleased for not having to shoulder the entire weight of a production for once. Mr. Matthew Polenzani makes his debut as Nemorino, Mr. Marius Kwiecien is Belcore, and Mr. Ambrogio Maestri is Dulcamare for the opening night performance. Maestro Maurizio Benini is on the podium. This L’Elisir runs for six performances and returns to the Metropolitan in January with only one cast change: Mr. Erwin Schrott will replace Mr. Ambrogio Maestri as Dulcamare.
