La Gioconda in Rome

La Gioconda will prima on the evening of October 23rd at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma for a six performance run. This is a joint production of the Teatro Real and the Gran Teatro del Liceu which closes the 2012-2013 season at the theatre. The principal roles are all double cast except for that of La Cieca who is portrayed by Miss Elisabetta Fiorello. Miss Jennifer Wilson and Miss Elisabete Matos are Gioconda, Miss Ekaterina Semenchuk and Miss Anna Malavasi are Laura, Messrs Roberto Scandiuzzi and Carlo Cigni are Alvise, Messrs Aquiles Machado and Kamen Chanev are Enzo, and Messrs Claudio Sgura and Marco Di Felice are Barnaba. COMMANDOpera notes both casts are of interest vocally, although one would have enjoyed the duet of Gioconda and Laura to take place between the artists of the alternate casts (Matos-Semenchuk). Perhaps Rome audiences may get a particular vocal treat one evening if this takes place.

Miss Matos essays the final scene from La Gioconda 2009 Tokyo.
